We're Hopeful That Sera Prognostics (NASDAQ:SERA) Will Use Its Cash Wisely
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?
So, the natural question for Sera Prognostics (NASDAQ:SERA) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

When Might Sera Prognostics Run Out Of Money?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. In September 2021, Sera Prognostics had US$120m in cash, and was debt-free. Importantly, its cash burn was US$27m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of about 4.4 years from September 2021. There's no doubt that this is a reassuringly long runway. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Is Sera Prognostics' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Whilst it's great to see that Sera Prognostics has already begun generating revenue from operations, last year it only produced US$62k, so we don't think it is generating significant revenue, at this point. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. Over the last year its cash burn actually increased by a very significant 55%. Oftentimes, increased cash burn simply means a company is accelerating its business development, but one should always be mindful that this causes the cash runway to shrink. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Easily Can Sera Prognostics Raise Cash?
Given its cash burn trajectory, Sera Prognostics shareholders may wish to consider how easily it could raise more cash, despite its solid cash runway. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Sera Prognostics has a market capitalisation of US$270m and burnt through US$27m last year, which is 10% of the company's market value. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.
Is Sera Prognostics' Cash Burn A Worry?
It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Sera Prognostics is burning through its cash. For example, we think its cash runway suggests that the company is on a good path. While its increasing cash burn wasn't great, the other factors mentioned in this article more than make up for weakness on that measure. Looking at all the measures in this article, together, we're not worried about its rate of cash burn; the company seems well on top of its medium-term spending needs. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 4 warning signs for Sera Prognostics (of which 2 are concerning!) you should know about.
