Companies Like Rapport Therapeutics (NASDAQ:RAPP) Can Afford To Invest In Growth
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?
So should Rapport Therapeutics (NASDAQ:RAPP) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.

When Might Rapport Therapeutics Run Out Of Money?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. When Rapport Therapeutics last reported its September 2024 balance sheet in November 2024, it had zero debt and cash worth US$321m. Importantly, its cash burn was US$64m over the trailing twelve months. That means it had a cash runway of about 5.0 years as of September 2024. Notably, however, analysts think that Rapport Therapeutics will break even (at a free cash flow level) before then. In that case, it may never reach the end of its cash runway. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is Rapport Therapeutics' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Because Rapport Therapeutics isn't currently generating revenue, we consider it an early-stage business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. In fact, it ramped its spending strongly over the last year, increasing cash burn by 169%. That sort of ramp in expenditure is no doubt intended to generate worthwhile long term returns. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
Can Rapport Therapeutics Raise More Cash Easily?
Given its cash burn trajectory, Rapport Therapeutics shareholders may wish to consider how easily it could raise more cash, despite its solid cash runway. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Rapport Therapeutics' cash burn of US$64m is about 8.7% of its US$741m market capitalisation. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.
Is Rapport Therapeutics' Cash Burn A Worry?
It may already be apparent to you that we're relatively comfortable with the way Rapport Therapeutics is burning through its cash. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. While we must concede that its increasing cash burn is a bit worrying, the other factors mentioned in this article provide great comfort when it comes to the cash burn. There's no doubt that shareholders can take a lot of heart from the fact that analysts are forecasting it will reach breakeven before too long. Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 4 warning signs for Rapport Therapeutics (2 can't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
