Poseida Therapeutics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PSTX) Share Price Boosted 43% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too

Despite an already strong run, Poseida Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:PSTX) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 43% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 39% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, Poseida Therapeutics may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 6.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 11.6x and even P/S higher than 49x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Has Poseida Therapeutics Performed Recently?

Poseida Therapeutics hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Poseida Therapeutics?

Poseida Therapeutics' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 67% decrease to the company's top line. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in revenue being achieved in total. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the four analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 43% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 221% per annum, which paints a poor picture.

In light of this, it's understandable that Poseida Therapeutics' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Final Word

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Poseida Therapeutics' P/S close to the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

It's clear to see that Poseida Therapeutics maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
