Market Cool On ProPhase Labs, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PRPH) Revenues Pushing Shares 26% Lower

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the ProPhase Labs, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRPH) share price has dived 26% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 48% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, it's still not a stretch to say that ProPhase Labs' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.5x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 2.7x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has ProPhase Labs Performed Recently?

ProPhase Labs hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, ProPhase Labs would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 70%. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in revenue being achieved in total. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 142% as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 18%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that ProPhase Labs' P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Key Takeaway

Following ProPhase Labs' share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Looking at ProPhase Labs' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. Perhaps uncertainty in the revenue forecasts are what's keeping the P/S ratio consistent with the rest of the industry. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
