Those holding Molecular Templates, Inc. (NASDAQ:MTEM) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 27% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 84% share price decline over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Molecular Templates may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 12x and even P/S higher than 64x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Molecular Templates' Recent Performance Look Like?

Molecular Templates could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Molecular Templates?

Molecular Templates' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 34% decrease to the company's top line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 77% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 69% as estimated by the only analyst watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 243% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.

With this information, we are not surprised that Molecular Templates is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From Molecular Templates' P/S?

Molecular Templates' recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

It's clear to see that Molecular Templates maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
