MediciNova to get US patent for MN-166 to treat brain cancer

MediciNova (NASDAQ:MNOV) said it will receive a new patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office which covers MN-166 (ibudilast) to treat glioblastoma. The new patent is expected to expire no earlier than February 2039, the company said in a Sept. 14 press release. Glioblastoma is a type of cancer that can occur in the brain or spinal cord. The allowed claims cover a method of treating a patient with glioblastoma or recurrent glioblastoma wherein a patient expresses unmethylated MGMT, using MN-166 (ibudilast) in combination with one or more other therapeutic agents. "Results of our glioblastoma animal model study showed that median survival was longer in the group that received combination treatment with MN-166 plus temozolomide compared to the group that received the standard treatment of temozolomide alone," said MediciNova Chief Medical Officer Kazuko Matsuda.

MediciNova begins study of parenteral formulation of MN-166

MediciNova (NASDAQ:MNOV) said it started a first-in-human study of a new parenteral formulation of MN-166 (ibudilast). The company said the newly developed MN-166 (ibudilast) formulation will provide an additional option besides the current oral formulation. "With MN-166 expected to be effective to treat a variety of diseases, we believe expanding to a parenteral formulation increases the feasibility of treating more target indications, thus increasing the value of MN-166," said MediciNova Chief Medical Officer Kazuko Matsuda. In April, the company reported data from a phase 2 trial of MN-166 for alcohol use disorder, showing that the drug reduced alcohol craving on non-drinking days.

MediciNova announces extension of BARDA contract for Ibudilast development

MediciNova (NASDAQ:MNOV) said on Wednesday that a modification to its contract with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) for its small molecule candidate MN-166 (ibudilast). Under the partnership with BARDA, the company will repurpose MN-166 as a potential medical countermeasure against chlorine gas-induced lung damage such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute lung injury (ALI). The contract was amended to extend the period of performance until March 2023. BARDA, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will fund the proof-of-concept studies in preclinical models of chlorine gas-induced acute lung injury. The project has been funded in whole or in part with federal funds from the Department of Health and Human Services; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response; Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority. Last year in March, MediciNova jumps on BARDA partnership for Ibudilast development. Shares are up 2.75% after-hours.
