Jaguar Health, Inc. (NASDAQ:JAGX) Might Not Be As Mispriced As It Looks After Plunging 27%
Jaguar Health, Inc. (NASDAQ:JAGX) shares have had a horrible month, losing 27% after a relatively good period beforehand. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 95% loss during that time.
After such a large drop in price, Jaguar Health may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x, considering almost half of all companies in the Pharmaceuticals industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3x and even P/S higher than 16x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Jaguar Health Performed Recently?
Jaguar Health hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Jaguar Health's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 7.9% decrease to the company's top line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 46% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 51% during the coming year according to the lone analyst following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 22% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Jaguar Health's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Final Word
Shares in Jaguar Health have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
A look at Jaguar Health's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
