We're Keeping An Eye On Century Therapeutics' (NASDAQ:IPSC) Cash Burn Rate
We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. Having said that, unprofitable companies are risky because they could potentially burn through all their cash and become distressed.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Century Therapeutics (NASDAQ:IPSC) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.
Does Century Therapeutics Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. As at September 2025, Century Therapeutics had cash of US$133m and no debt. Importantly, its cash burn was US$113m over the trailing twelve months. So it had a cash runway of approximately 14 months from September 2025. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Well Is Century Therapeutics Growing?
Over the last year, Century Therapeutics maintained its cash burn at a fairly steady level. But the good news is that operating revenue exploded by 4,123% in that same period! It seems to be growing nicely. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
How Easily Can Century Therapeutics Raise Cash?
Even though it seems like Century Therapeutics is developing its business nicely, we still like to consider how easily it could raise more money to accelerate growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash and drive growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Century Therapeutics' cash burn of US$113m is about 238% of its US$48m market capitalisation. That suggests the company may have some funding difficulties, and we'd be very wary of the stock.
How Risky Is Century Therapeutics' Cash Burn Situation?
Even though its cash burn relative to its market cap makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Century Therapeutics' revenue growth was relatively promising. Summing up, we think the Century Therapeutics' cash burn is a risk, based on the factors we mentioned in this article. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 4 warning signs for Century Therapeutics (of which 2 don't sit too well with us!) you should know about.
