Stock Analysis

We Think Insight Molecular Diagnostics (NASDAQ:IMDX) Needs To Drive Business Growth Carefully

Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, Insight Molecular Diagnostics (NASDAQ:IMDX) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 156%. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

So notwithstanding the buoyant share price, we think it's well worth asking whether Insight Molecular Diagnostics' cash burn is too risky. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

Does Insight Molecular Diagnostics Have A Long Cash Runway?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. As at June 2025, Insight Molecular Diagnostics had cash of US$24m and no debt. In the last year, its cash burn was US$24m. So it had a cash runway of approximately 12 months from June 2025. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Is Insight Molecular Diagnostics' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

In our view, Insight Molecular Diagnostics doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just US$4.3m in the last twelve months. As a result, we think it's a bit early to focus on the revenue growth, so we'll limit ourselves to looking at how the cash burn is changing over time. Over the last year its cash burn actually increased by 18%, which suggests that management are increasing investment in future growth, but not too quickly. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but investors should be mindful of the fact that will shorten the cash runway. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

Can Insight Molecular Diagnostics Raise More Cash Easily?

Given its cash burn trajectory, Insight Molecular Diagnostics shareholders may wish to consider how easily it could raise more cash, despite its solid cash runway. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.

Insight Molecular Diagnostics' cash burn of US$24m is about 11% of its US$215m market capitalisation. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.

Is Insight Molecular Diagnostics' Cash Burn A Worry?

Even though its increasing cash burn makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Insight Molecular Diagnostics' cash burn relative to its market cap was relatively promising.
