Harvard Bioscience, Inc. (NASDAQ:HBIO) Looks Inexpensive After Falling 31% But Perhaps Not Attractive Enough

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Harvard Bioscience, Inc. (NASDAQ:HBIO) share price has dived 31% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 68% loss during that time.

After such a large drop in price, Harvard Bioscience may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, considering almost half of all companies in the Life Sciences industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3.5x and even P/S higher than 7x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Harvard Bioscience Performed Recently?

Harvard Bioscience hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Harvard Bioscience's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Harvard Bioscience's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 13%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 16% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 1.0% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 3.4%.

In light of this, it's understandable that Harvard Bioscience's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Final Word

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Harvard Bioscience's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

It's clear to see that Harvard Bioscience maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
