Positive Sentiment Still Eludes ChromaDex Corporation (NASDAQ:CDXC) Following 26% Share Price Slump
ChromaDex Corporation (NASDAQ:CDXC) shares have retraced a considerable 26% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Looking at the bigger picture, even after this poor month the stock is up 78% in the last year.
Following the heavy fall in price, ChromaDex may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Life Sciences industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 3.2x and even P/S higher than 6x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does ChromaDex's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
ChromaDex certainly has been doing a good job lately as its revenue growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their revenue go backwards. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to follow the rest of the industry downwards, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, ChromaDex would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 7.5% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 40% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 21% over the next year. With the industry only predicted to deliver 4.2%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that ChromaDex's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On ChromaDex's P/S
The southerly movements of ChromaDex's shares means its P/S is now sitting at a pretty low level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
ChromaDex's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
