Revenues Working Against Bionano Genomics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:BNGO) Share Price Following 26% Dive
To the annoyance of some shareholders, Bionano Genomics, Inc. (NASDAQ:BNGO) shares are down a considerable 26% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 95% share price decline.
After such a large drop in price, Bionano Genomics may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Life Sciences industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.5x and even P/S higher than 5x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Bionano Genomics Performed Recently?
Bionano Genomics hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Bionano Genomics would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 15%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 71% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 1.7% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 3.3% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.
In light of this, it's understandable that Bionano Genomics' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What Does Bionano Genomics' P/S Mean For Investors?
Having almost fallen off a cliff, Bionano Genomics' share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
It's clear to see that Bionano Genomics maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Bionano Genomics' poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
