Little Excitement Around Amarin Corporation plc's (NASDAQ:AMRN) Revenues

You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x Amarin Corporation plc (NASDAQ:AMRN) is definitely a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Biotechs companies in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 13.2x and even P/S above 77x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Amarin's Recent Performance Look Like?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Amarin's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Keen to find out how analysts think Amarin's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Amarin's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 24%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 57% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 4.9% per annum as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 145% per year.

In light of this, it's understandable that Amarin's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From Amarin's P/S?

We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Amarin's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Amarin's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 1 warning sign for Amarin that you need to be mindful of.
