Here's Why We're Watching Aligos Therapeutics' (NASDAQ:ALGS) Cash Burn Situation
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Aligos Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ALGS) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). We'll start by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves in order to calculate its cash runway.

Does Aligos Therapeutics Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. As at June 2023, Aligos Therapeutics had cash of US$91m and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$70m. That means it had a cash runway of around 16 months as of June 2023. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Well Is Aligos Therapeutics Growing?
We reckon the fact that Aligos Therapeutics managed to shrink its cash burn by 36% over the last year is rather encouraging. But the operating revenue growth of 111% was even better. It seems to be growing nicely. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
How Hard Would It Be For Aligos Therapeutics To Raise More Cash For Growth?
While Aligos Therapeutics seems to be in a fairly good position, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
Aligos Therapeutics' cash burn of US$70m is about 270% of its US$26m market capitalisation. That suggests the company may have some funding difficulties, and we'd be very wary of the stock.
Is Aligos Therapeutics' Cash Burn A Worry?
Even though its cash burn relative to its market cap makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Aligos Therapeutics' revenue growth was relatively promising. Summing up, we think the Aligos Therapeutics' cash burn is a risk, based on the factors we mentioned in this article.
