Altice USA, Inc.'s (NYSE:ATUS) Share Price Boosted 35% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Those holding Altice USA, Inc. (NYSE:ATUS) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 35% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 31% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Altice USA may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Media industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 0.9x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Altice USA's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Altice USA hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Altice USA would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 2.9% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 8.6% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 2.5% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 4.8% per annum.
With this information, we are not surprised that Altice USA is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Bottom Line On Altice USA's P/S
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Altice USA's P/S close to the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
It's clear to see that Altice USA maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
