Does JOYY (NASDAQ:YY) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
Howard Marks put it nicely when he said that, rather than worrying about share price volatility, 'The possibility of permanent loss is the risk I worry about... and every practical investor I know worries about.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. We note that JOYY Inc. (NASDAQ:YY) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
What Risk Does Debt Bring?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does JOYY Carry?
You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that JOYY had US$906.3m of debt in March 2022, down from US$1.09b, one year before. However, it does have US$4.15b in cash offsetting this, leading to net cash of US$3.24b.
How Healthy Is JOYY's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that JOYY had liabilities of US$2.50b due within a year, and liabilities of US$1.01b falling due after that. Offsetting these obligations, it had cash of US$4.15b as well as receivables valued at US$203.4m due within 12 months. So it actually has US$832.6m more liquid assets than total liabilities.
This excess liquidity is a great indication that JOYY's balance sheet is almost as strong as Fort Knox. With this in mind one could posit that its balance sheet means the company is able to handle some adversity. Simply put, the fact that JOYY has more cash than debt is arguably a good indication that it can manage its debt safely. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine JOYY's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you're focused on the future you can check out this free report showing analyst profit forecasts.
Over 12 months, JOYY reported revenue of US$2.6b, which is a gain of 17%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. We usually like to see faster growth from unprofitable companies, but each to their own.
So How Risky Is JOYY?
Although JOYY had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last twelve months, it generated positive free cash flow of US$26m. So although it is loss-making, it doesn't seem to have too much near-term balance sheet risk, keeping in mind the net cash. We'll feel more comfortable with the stock once EBIT is positive, given the lacklustre revenue growth. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. For example JOYY has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about.
