Narrative Update May 07

TRIP: Execution Headwinds In Core Business Will Continue To Limit Upside

Tripadvisor's analyst price target has been reduced by a few dollars, with analysts generally citing pressure on the core Hotel & Other segment, tougher AI related sentiment around online travel agents, and uncertainty about execution despite potential value from assets like Viator and TheFork. Analyst Commentary Recent research on Tripadvisor has skewed cautious, with several bearish analysts cutting price targets and reiterating Neutral views.
Narrative Update Apr 21

TRIP: Activist Board Changes And Experiences Focus Will Unlock Undervalued Potential

Analysts have trimmed the Tripadvisor fair value estimate from $24.10 to $22.00. This reflects updated assumptions for slightly softer revenue growth, modestly lower profit margins, a higher discount rate and a higher future P/E multiple that is broadly consistent with the recent wave of reduced Street price targets on the stock.
Narrative Update Apr 07

TRIP: Activist Board Changes Will Likely Fail To Resolve Execution Risks

The analyst price target for Tripadvisor is now set closer to $14, with recent revisions clustering in the $11 to $14 range, as analysts factor in a clearer catalyst path highlighted by BofA, alongside concerns about legacy segment pressures, competitive gaps in Experiences, AI-related de-rating across online travel agents, and potential distractions from activist-driven board changes. Analyst Commentary Recent research on Tripadvisor shows a split view.
Narrative Update Mar 24

TRIP: Activist Board Shake Up Will Likely Fail To Offset Structural Headwinds

Analysts have reduced Tripadvisor's price target by several dollars to a range of $11 to $14. This reflects updated sum-of-the-parts valuations for the core business, Viator and TheFork, along with ongoing concerns about pressures in legacy segments and competitive momentum in Experiences.
Narrative Update Mar 08

TRIP: Activist Board Fight And Legacy Pressure Will Limit Near Term Upside

Analysts have cut their blended fair value estimate for Tripadvisor from $12.00 to $8.50. This reflects a series of lower Street price targets as they weigh ongoing pressure in legacy operations, a higher discount rate, more conservative growth and margin assumptions, and uncertainty around activist involvement and asset sales.
Narrative Update Feb 22

TRIP: Activist Board Shake Up Will Refocus Experiences And Portfolio Simplification

The consensus analyst price target for Tripadvisor has shifted lower by about $2.60 to roughly $14.40, as analysts factor in softer expectations for core profitability and growth, alongside ongoing segment pressures and potential activist-driven changes to the board. Analyst Commentary Recent research updates on Tripadvisor cluster around Neutral ratings, but the reasoning behind those views gives you a useful checklist of what is working and what still needs to improve in the story.

Tripadvisor: A Focus On Experiences Won't Stop The Bleeding

Summary Tripadvisor remains a "Sell" as core hotel bookings underperform and competitive threats intensify, eroding brand value and market share. Q4 results disappointed, with flat revenue, sharp hotel booking declines, and adjusted EBITDA margins falling 670 bps year-over-year. Cost savings are insufficient, with only $85 million targeted (4% of revenue), while buybacks were poorly timed and failed to signal confidence. Potential upside from strategic actions or valuation appears limited, as fundamentals continue to deteriorate and experiences growth faces mounting competition. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha

TRIP: Experiences Pivot And Cost Cuts Will Reshape Risk Reward Profile

Analysts have trimmed their price targets on Tripadvisor, with our fair value estimate moving from $18.16 to $16.97 as they factor in a higher discount rate, more moderate revenue growth assumptions, and only slight changes to profit margin and future P/E expectations. Analyst Commentary Recent Street research on Tripadvisor has leaned more cautious on the stock's upside, with several firms lowering price targets while one higher profile upgrade reflects a more balanced risk and reward profile.
Narrative Update Jan 24

TRIP: Experiences Shift And Workforce Cuts Will Restrain Near Term Upside

Analysts have trimmed their fair value estimate on Tripadvisor from $13.50 to $12.00. This reflects updated assumptions for slower revenue growth, softer profit margins, a higher discount rate and a higher future P/E multiple, despite ongoing interest in the company's shift toward experiences and AI enabled offerings.

Tripadvisor: Don't Be Tempted - Maintaining Sell

Summary Tripadvisor reported positive earnings results for Q4, beating on EPS and revenue, but guiding for flat to declining revenue in Q1 of 2025. Viator segment is the growth engine for Tripadvisor, and TheFork is on its way up, but Brand Tripadvisor revenue has been sliding and is expected to continue to do so. Management's guidance for stabilizing Brand Tripadvisor by 2025 and returning to profitability by 2026 is too long-term to excite investors now. The Take Over, The Break's Over - Sell Tripadvisor

Summary I'm downgrading Tripadvisor to a sell after the stock price almost nearly fulfilled the buyout premium and considering the higher risk profile if the deal doesn't go through. Liberty Media's majority vote and ongoing securities fraud investigation add risk to the takeover deal, making the stock less attractive to jump into at $17.90. Viator is Tripadvisor's growth engine, but it alone won't support outperformance, in my opinion, especially with strong competitors in the travel industry. Analysts show little positive sentiment, with a majority holding or selling, and I share that bearish sentiment. I share hereon my thoughts on Tripadvisor and why I see limited upside for the near term. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha

Tripadvisor: Trim This Stock Amid Deteriorating Performance

Summary I am downgrading Tripadvisor, Inc. to neutral due to decelerating revenue trends and lack of meaningful catalysts for growth. Tripadvisor's merger with Liberty Tripadvisor, positioned as a buyback, reduces structural complexity but drains critical liquidity, impacting growth prospects. Meanwhile, fundamentals for the business continue to decline, with Tripadvisor and Viator both seeing decelerating trends. TRIP stock's valuation is appealing at <6x forward revenue, but its discount versus peers reflects its waning profitability while competitors are growing. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha

An Elephant In The Room With The Tripadvisor Majority Vote Holders

Summary Tripadvisor's ownership structure gives Liberty TripAdvisor Holdings a majority vote despite having only a 21% economic interest. Liberty TripAdvisor Holdings faces significant financial challenges, risking its "going concern" status due to upcoming debt and preferred stock maturities in March 2025. Tripadvisor itself is financially healthy, but Liberty TripAdvisor Holdings lacks the cash to meet obligations without accessing Tripadvisor's funds. Potential resolutions include dividends from Tripadvisor, external funding, or bankruptcy, with the belief that a solution will be a catalyst for future gains. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha

TripAdvisor: Isn't Worth The Trip; Sell

Summary TripAdvisor's stock plummeted after actively seeking a sale but failed to find a buyer, highlighting the market's (duly) skepticism about its competitive edge. Valuation challenges arise as profitable segments aren't growing and growing segments aren't profitable. TRIP is outcompeted by large competitors that enjoy network effects better. Its user-generated content is also challenged by AI tools and social media. Investment advice: TripAdvisor is not worth the trip. Read the full article on Seeking Alpha

Tripadvisor: High Conviction Buy -Will Heavy Tourist Activist Lead To Powerful Guidance

Summary Tripadvisor management's decision to terminate exploration of a company sale brought the stock back into play in May. Q2 expectations are muted due to a tough comp and the Early Easter holiday this year. The Olympics, the travel surge to parts of Europe including Spain, and the easier Q3 guidance raise the likelihood that TRIP shares rally after Q2 results are discussed.
