We Think Golden Matrix Group (NASDAQ:GMGI) Has A Fair Chunk Of Debt

Warren Buffett famously said, 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. As with many other companies Golden Matrix Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:GMGI) makes use of debt. But should shareholders be worried about its use of debt?

Why Does Debt Bring Risk?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Having said that, the most common situation is where a company manages its debt reasonably well - and to its own advantage. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Golden Matrix Group's Debt?

The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Golden Matrix Group had debt of US$22.5m at the end of June 2025, a reduction from US$28.5m over a year. However, because it has a cash reserve of US$22.5m, its net debt is less, at about US$25.0k.

A Look At Golden Matrix Group's Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, Golden Matrix Group had liabilities of US$63.6m due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$21.7m due beyond 12 months. Offsetting this, it had US$22.5m in cash and US$10.5m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$52.3m.

This deficit isn't so bad because Golden Matrix Group is worth US$142.3m, and thus could probably raise enough capital to shore up its balance sheet, if the need arose. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt. Carrying virtually no net debt, Golden Matrix Group has a very light debt load indeed. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But ultimately the future profitability of the business will decide if Golden Matrix Group can strengthen its balance sheet over time. In the last year Golden Matrix Group wasn't profitable at an EBIT level, but managed to grow its revenue by 55%, to US$173m. Shareholders probably have their fingers crossed that it can grow its way to profits.

Caveat Emptor

While we can certainly appreciate Golden Matrix Group's revenue growth, its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is not ideal. To be specific the EBIT loss came in at US$3.5m. When we look at that and recall the liabilities on its balance sheet, relative to cash, it seems unwise to us for the company to have any debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. For example, we would not want to see a repeat of last year's loss of US$9.4m. So we do think this stock is quite risky. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. For example - Golden Matrix Group has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
