Fox Corporation (NASDAQ:FOXA) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 25th of September to $0.27. This takes the annual payment to 1.4% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

Fox's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Before making this announcement, Fox was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 20.4%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 14% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Fox Is Still Building Its Track Record
The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 5 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. The annual payment during the last 5 years was $0.46 in 2019, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $0.54. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 3.3% per annum over that time. It's good to see at least some dividend growth. Yet with a relatively short dividend paying history, we wouldn't want to depend on this dividend too heavily.
Fox May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 4.9% per year. If Fox is struggling to find viable investments, it always has the option to increase its payout ratio to pay more to shareholders.
Our Thoughts On Fox's Dividend
In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
