Further Upside For Fluent, Inc. (NASDAQ:FLNT) Shares Could Introduce Price Risks After 30% Bounce
Fluent, Inc. (NASDAQ:FLNT) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 30% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 12% in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, Fluent may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Media industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Fluent Has Been Performing
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Fluent's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Fluent's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 19% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 44% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 7.9% each year during the coming three years according to the dual analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 5.1% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it odd that Fluent is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Fluent's P/S
Fluent's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
To us, it seems Fluent currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 4 warning signs for Fluent (2 are significant!) that you need to be mindful of.
Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
