Despite an already strong run, CuriosityStream Inc. (NASDAQ:CURI) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 32% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 77%.

Although its price has surged higher, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about CuriosityStream's P/S ratio of 1.4x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Entertainment industry in the United States is also close to 1.6x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How CuriosityStream Has Been Performing

CuriosityStream hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like CuriosityStream's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 15%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 21% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 6.0% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 12% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we find it interesting that CuriosityStream is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What Does CuriosityStream's P/S Mean For Investors?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now CuriosityStream's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Given that CuriosityStream's revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. A positive change is needed in order to justify the current price-to-sales ratio.
