Scully Royalty Ltd.'s (NYSE:SRL) 30% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Scully Royalty Ltd. (NYSE:SRL) shares are down a considerable 30% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 44% share price drop.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Scully Royalty's P/S ratio of 1.4x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Metals and Mining industry in the United States is also close to 1.1x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Scully Royalty Has Been Performing

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Scully Royalty over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Scully Royalty?

Scully Royalty's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 11% decrease to the company's top line. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 44% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 4.7% shows it's an unpleasant look.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Scully Royalty's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the recent poor growth rate and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Scully Royalty's P/S

Following Scully Royalty's share price tumble, its P/S is just clinging on to the industry median P/S. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We find it unexpected that Scully Royalty trades at a P/S ratio that is comparable to the rest of the industry, despite experiencing declining revenues during the medium-term, while the industry as a whole is expected to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, investors will have a hard time accepting the share price as fair value.
