AptarGroup (NYSE:ATR) Has More To Do To Multiply In Value Going Forward
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at AptarGroup's (NYSE:ATR) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for AptarGroup, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.12 = US$376m ÷ (US$4.3b - US$1.0b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
So, AptarGroup has an ROCE of 12%. That's a relatively normal return on capital, and it's around the 11% generated by the Packaging industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For AptarGroup Tell Us?
While the returns on capital are good, they haven't moved much. The company has consistently earned 12% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 20% in that time. 12% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that AptarGroup has consistently earned this amount. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
In Conclusion...
To sum it up, AptarGroup has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And given the stock has only risen 33% over the last five years, we'd suspect the market is beginning to recognize these trends. So because of the trends we're seeing, we'd recommend looking further into this stock to see if it has the makings of a multi-bagger.
