Hawkins, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:HWKN) Shares Climb 37% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up
Despite an already strong run, Hawkins, Inc. (NASDAQ:HWKN) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 37% in the last thirty days. The last month tops off a massive increase of 144% in the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, given close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may consider Hawkins as a stock to avoid entirely with its 31.4x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Hawkins has been doing quite well of late. It seems that many are expecting the company to continue defying the broader market adversity, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Hawkins would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 27% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 77% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 3.5% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 14%, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it concerning that Hawkins is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Shares in Hawkins have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Hawkins' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a weak earnings outlook with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
