Have Genworth Financial Insiders Been Selling Stock?

We'd be surprised if Genworth Financial, Inc. (NYSE:GNW) shareholders haven't noticed that the Executive VP & General Counsel, Gregory Karawan, recently sold US$340k worth of stock at US$8.51 per share. The eyebrow raising move amounted to a reduction of 12% in their holding.

Genworth Financial Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Rohit Gupta, sold US$750k worth of shares at a price of US$8.68 per share. That means that even when the share price was slightly below the current price of US$8.71, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 9.7% of Rohit Gupta's holding.

Does Genworth Financial Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Genworth Financial insiders own about US$78m worth of shares. That equates to 2.2% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Genworth Financial Tell Us?

An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. Looking to the last twelve months, our data doesn't show any insider buying. But since Genworth Financial is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. We'd practice some caution before buying! In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing Genworth Financial.
