Nature's Sunshine Products, Inc. (NASDAQ:NATR) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 14% in the last quarter. On the bright side the share price is up over the last half decade. In that time, it is up 73%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 102%.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, Nature's Sunshine Products achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 111% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 12% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Nature's Sunshine Products' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Nature's Sunshine Products' TSR of 83% over the last 5 years is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Nature's Sunshine Products shareholders gained a total return of 18% during the year. But that return falls short of the market. On the bright side, that's still a gain, and it's actually better than the average return of 13% over half a decade This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy.
