Should We Be Excited About The Trends Of Returns At Meridian Bioscience (NASDAQ:VIVO)?
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Meridian Bioscience (NASDAQ:VIVO) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Meridian Bioscience, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.17 = US$62m ÷ (US$405m - US$53m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2020).
So, Meridian Bioscience has an ROCE of 17%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Medical Equipment industry average of 10.0% it's much better.

So How Is Meridian Bioscience's ROCE Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Meridian Bioscience, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 33% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
The Bottom Line
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Meridian Bioscience is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. In light of this, the stock has only gained 35% over the last five years. Therefore we'd recommend looking further into this stock to confirm if it has the makings of a good investment.
