Here's What's Concerning About PetIQ's (NASDAQ:PETQ) Returns On Capital
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. However, after investigating PetIQ (NASDAQ:PETQ), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on PetIQ is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.028 = US$21m ÷ (US$924m - US$173m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2022).
Thus, PetIQ has an ROCE of 2.8%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Healthcare industry average of 10%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For PetIQ Tell Us?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at PetIQ, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 6.4% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
Our Take On PetIQ's ROCE
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for PetIQ. However, despite the promising trends, the stock has fallen 34% over the last five years, so there might be an opportunity here for astute investors. So we think it'd be worthwhile to look further into this stock given the trends look encouraging.
