Insiders At National Research Sold US$17m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness
The fact that multiple National Research Corporation (NASDAQ:NRC) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At National Research
In fact, the recent sale by Founder Michael Hays was not their only sale of National Research shares this year. They previously made an even bigger sale of -US$2.5m worth of shares at a price of US$40.98 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$42.11. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was only 1.1%of Michael Hays's holding.

Does National Research Boast High Insider Ownership?
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that National Research insiders own 41% of the company, worth about US$427m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
