The Spectral AI, Inc. (NASDAQ:MDAI) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 71% share price decline.

Following the heavy fall in price, Spectral AI's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.9x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Medical Equipment industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3.3x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Spectral AI's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Recent times haven't been great for Spectral AI as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Spectral AI?

Spectral AI's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. However, a few strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 31% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders will be pleased, but also have some questions to ponder about the last 12 months.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 33% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 9.1% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Spectral AI's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Spectral AI's P/S?

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Spectral AI's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

To us, it seems Spectral AI currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
