There Are Reasons To Feel Uneasy About Lantheus Holdings' (NASDAQ:LNTH) Returns On Capital
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Lantheus Holdings (NASDAQ:LNTH) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for Lantheus Holdings, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.0049 = US$3.8m ÷ (US$864m - US$90m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
Therefore, Lantheus Holdings has an ROCE of 0.5%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Medical Equipment industry average of 8.2%.

The Trend Of ROCE
In terms of Lantheus Holdings' historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 24% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
The Bottom Line On Lantheus Holdings' ROCE
While returns have fallen for Lantheus Holdings in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 362% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So should these growth trends continue, we'd be optimistic on the stock going forward.
