Investors in IDEXX Laboratories (NASDAQ:IDXX) have seen notable returns of 60% over the past five years
When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDXX) share price is up 60% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Meanwhile, the last twelve months saw the share price rise 4.9%.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over half a decade, IDEXX Laboratories managed to grow its earnings per share at 17% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 10% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

A Different Perspective
IDEXX Laboratories provided a TSR of 4.9% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
