IDEXX Laboratories' (NASDAQ:IDXX) investors will be pleased with their decent 97% return over the last three years
By buying an index fund, investors can approximate the average market return. But if you buy good businesses at attractive prices, your portfolio returns could exceed the average market return. Just take a look at IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDXX), which is up 97%, over three years, soundly beating the market return of 80% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 28% in the last year.
Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.
While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During three years of share price growth, IDEXX Laboratories achieved compound earnings per share growth of 16% per year. In comparison, the 25% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. It's not unusual to see the market 're-rate' a stock, after a few years of growth. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 52.63.

A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that IDEXX Laboratories shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 28% over one year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 11% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand IDEXX Laboratories better, we need to consider many other factors.
