Capital Allocation Trends At Astrana Health (NASDAQ:ASTH) Aren't Ideal
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Astrana Health (NASDAQ:ASTH) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Astrana Health is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = US$92m ÷ (US$1.2b - US$355m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
So, Astrana Health has an ROCE of 11%. By itself that's a normal return on capital and it's in line with the industry's average returns of 11%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Astrana Health doesn't inspire confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 15%, but since then they've fallen to 11%. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a side note, Astrana Health's current liabilities have increased over the last five years to 29% of total assets, effectively distorting the ROCE to some degree. If current liabilities hadn't increased as much as they did, the ROCE could actually be even lower. Keep an eye on this ratio, because the business could encounter some new risks if this metric gets too high.
The Bottom Line
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Astrana Health. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 191% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So should these growth trends continue, we'd be optimistic on the stock going forward.
