The Limoneira Company (NASDAQ:LMNR) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 43% in the last year.

Following the firm bounce in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Limoneira is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.9x, considering almost half the companies in the United States' Food industry have P/S ratios below 0.8x. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Limoneira Has Been Performing

Limoneira hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Keen to find out how analysts think Limoneira's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Limoneira's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Likewise, not much has changed from three years ago as revenue have been stuck during that whole time. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been satisfied with the complete absence of medium-term growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 7.2% during the coming year according to the five analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 2.3%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Limoneira's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Limoneira's P/S?

Limoneira shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We've established that Limoneira maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Food industry, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident future revenues aren't under threat. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
