Quite a few insiders have dramatically grown their holdings in TXO Partners, L.P. (NYSE:TXO) over the past 12 months. An insider's optimism about the company's prospects is a positive sign.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

TXO Partners Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by CEO & Chairman of the Board of TXO Energy GP Bob Simpson for US$4.9m worth of shares, at about US$17.60 per share. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$21.90. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

In the last twelve months insiders purchased 475.65k shares for US$8.4m. But insiders sold 14.34k shares worth US$293k. In total, TXO Partners insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. TXO Partners Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of TXO Partners shares. In total, Independent Director of TXO Energy GP John King dumped US$212k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.

Does TXO Partners Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. TXO Partners insiders own 28% of the company, currently worth about US$190m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About TXO Partners Insiders?

An insider hasn't bought TXO Partners stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. In contrast, they appear keener if you look at the last twelve months. On top of that, insiders own a significant portion of the company. So we're not too bothered by recent selling. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for TXO Partners (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
