Tidewater Inc. (NYSE:TDW) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 20x, you may consider Tidewater Inc. (NYSE:TDW) as an attractive investment with its 14.1x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Tidewater certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Tidewater?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Tidewater would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 26% last year. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 20% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% each year growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it odd that Tidewater is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Tidewater's P/E?

Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Tidewater currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
