Scorpio Tankers Inc.'s (NYSE:STNG) Earnings Are Not Doing Enough For Some Investors
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 7.4x Scorpio Tankers Inc. (NYSE:STNG) may be sending very bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 32x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
Scorpio Tankers has been struggling lately as its earnings have declined faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably low because investors think this poor earnings performance isn't going to improve at all. If you still like the company, you'd want its earnings trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Scorpio Tankers' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 32%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 3.9% per year as estimated by the eleven analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 9.9% per annum, which paints a poor picture.
In light of this, it's understandable that Scorpio Tankers' P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Key Takeaway
It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Scorpio Tankers maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
