Magnolia Oil & Gas' (NYSE:MGY) five-year earnings growth trails the 31% YoY shareholder returns
Magnolia Oil & Gas Corporation (NYSE:MGY) shareholders have seen the share price descend 14% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been very strong. In fact, the share price is 264% higher today. To some, the recent pullback wouldn't be surprising after such a fast rise. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.
Since the stock has added US$279m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.
We check all companies for important risks. See what we found for Magnolia Oil & Gas in our free report. To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, Magnolia Oil & Gas managed to grow its earnings per share at 46% a year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 29% over the same period. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 11.30 also suggests market apprehension.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Magnolia Oil & Gas, it has a TSR of 292% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Investors in Magnolia Oil & Gas had a tough year, with a total loss of 16% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 9.3%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 31% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
