The board of FutureFuel Corp. (NYSE:FF) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 18th of December, with investors receiving $0.06 per share. Based on this payment, the dividend yield on the company's stock will be 6.1%, which is an attractive boost to shareholder returns.

FutureFuel Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Even in the absence of profits, FutureFuel is paying a dividend. It is also not generating any free cash flow, we definitely have concerns when it comes to the sustainability of the dividend.

Looking forward, earnings per share could 33.8% over the next year if the trend of the last few years can't be broken. This means the company will be unprofitable and managers could face the tough choice between continuing to pay the dividend or taking pressure off the balance sheet.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. There hasn't been much of a change in the dividend over the last 10 years. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Over the past five years, it looks as though FutureFuel's EPS has declined at around 34% a year. Such rapid declines definitely have the potential to constrain dividend payments if the trend continues into the future.

FutureFuel's Dividend Doesn't Look Great

Overall, while some might be pleased that the dividend wasn't cut, we think this may help FutureFuel make more consistent payments in the future. The company seems to be stretching itself a bit to make such big payments, but it doesn't appear they can be consistent over time. Overall, this doesn't get us very excited from an income standpoint.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
