For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is EOG Resources Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years EOG Resources' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. To the delight of shareholders, EOG Resources' EPS soared from US$9.81 to US$14.95, over the last year. That's a fantastic gain of 52%.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. We note that while EBIT margins have improved from 28% to 44%, the company has actually reported a fall in revenue by 5.4%. While not disastrous, these figures could be better.

Are EOG Resources Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Owing to the size of EOG Resources, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a significant proportion of the company. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth US$261m. While that is a lot of skin in the game, we note this holding only totals to 0.3% of the business, which is a result of the company being so large. This still shows shareholders there is a degree of alignment between management and themselves.
