EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG) Is Investing Its Capital With Increasing Efficiency
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at the ROCE trend of EOG Resources (NYSE:EOG) we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for EOG Resources, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.25 = US$9.9b ÷ (US$44b - US$4.2b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
So, EOG Resources has an ROCE of 25%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Oil and Gas industry average of 15%.

The Bottom Line On EOG Resources' ROCE
A company that is growing its returns on capital and can consistently reinvest in itself is a highly sought after trait, and that's what EOG Resources has.
