EnLink Midstream Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. EnLink Midstream is not generating a profit, but its free cash flows easily cover the dividend, leaving plenty for reinvestment in the business. This gives us some comfort about the level of the dividend payments.
Recent, EPS has fallen by 8.3%, so this could continue over the next year. While this means that the company will be unprofitable, we generally believe cash flows are more important, and the current cash payout ratio is quite healthy, which gives us comfort.
EnLink Midstream's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
It's comforting to see that EnLink Midstream has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. This suggests that the dividend might not be the most reliable. Since 2014, the first annual payment was US$0.72, compared to the most recent full-year payment of US$0.45. The dividend has shrunk at around 5.7% a year during that period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
With a relatively unstable dividend, and a poor history of shrinking dividends, it's even more important to see if EPS is growing. Over the past five years, it looks as though EnLink Midstream's EPS has declined at around 8.3% a year. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth.
The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think EnLink Midstream's payments are rock solid. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think EnLink Midstream is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
