Benign Growth For CVR Energy, Inc. (NYSE:CVI) Underpins Stock's 35% Plummet

Published
NYSE:CVI

The CVR Energy, Inc. (NYSE:CVI) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 35%. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 51% loss during that time.

Even after such a large drop in price, CVR Energy may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Oil and Gas industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.8x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does CVR Energy's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue that's retreating more than the industry's average of late, CVR Energy has been very sluggish. Perhaps the market isn't expecting future revenue performance to improve, which has kept the P/S suppressed. You'd much rather the company improve its revenue performance if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the revenue slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, CVR Energy would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 19%. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 26% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would be roughly satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 3.7% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 73%.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that CVR Energy's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

The Key Takeaway

CVR Energy's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Oil and Gas companies. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that CVR Energy's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
