If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at StealthGas (NASDAQ:GASS) so let's look a bit deeper.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on StealthGas is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.028 = US$25m ÷ (US$963m - US$72m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2021).
Thus, StealthGas has an ROCE of 2.8%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Oil and Gas industry average of 6.8%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
Even though ROCE is still low in absolute terms, it's good to see it's heading in the right direction. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 49% in that same time. So it's likely that the business is now reaping the full benefits of its past investments, since the capital employed hasn't changed considerably. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
Our Take On StealthGas' ROCE
To bring it all together, StealthGas has done well to increase the returns it's generating from its capital employed. And since the stock has fallen 21% over the last five years, there might be an opportunity here. So researching this company further and determining whether or not these trends will continue seems justified.
