Evercore Inc. (NYSE:EVR) Stocks Pounded By 31% But Not Lagging Market On Growth Or Pricing

Evercore Inc. (NYSE:EVR) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 31% share price drop in the last month. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.

Even after such a large drop in price, Evercore may still be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 19.7x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 17x and even P/E's lower than 10x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.

Recent times have been advantageous for Evercore as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Evercore's Growth Trending?

Evercore's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 47%. Still, incredibly EPS has fallen 48% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 19% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% each year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Evercore's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

There's still some solid strength behind Evercore's P/E, if not its share price lately. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Evercore's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
