Here's Why I Think BrightSphere Investment Group (NYSE:BSIG) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like BrightSphere Investment Group (NYSE:BSIG), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is BrightSphere Investment Group Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years BrightSphere Investment Group's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, BrightSphere Investment Group's EPS shot from US$1.70 to US$3.27, over the last year. Year on year growth of 93% is certainly a sight to behold.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. On the one hand, BrightSphere Investment Group's EBIT margins fell over the last year, but on the other hand, revenue grew. So it seems the future my hold further growth, especially if EBIT margins can stabilize.

Fortunately, we've got access to analyst forecasts of BrightSphere Investment Group's future profits. You can do your own forecasts without looking, or you can take a peek at what the professionals are predicting.

Are BrightSphere Investment Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

As a general rule, I think it worth considering how much the CEO is paid, since unreasonably high rates could be considered against the interests of shareholders. For companies with market capitalizations between US$1.0b and US$3.2b, like BrightSphere Investment Group, the median CEO pay is around US$3.7m.

The CEO of BrightSphere Investment Group only received US$1.4m in total compensation for the year ending . That's clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Does BrightSphere Investment Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

BrightSphere Investment Group's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. With rocketing profits, its seems likely the business has a rosy future; and it may have hit an inflection point. At the same time the reasonable CEO compensation reflects well on the board of directors. So BrightSphere Investment Group looks like it could be a good quality growth stock, at first glance. That's worth watching. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for BrightSphere Investment Group that you need to take into consideration.

Although BrightSphere Investment Group certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
