Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Bakkt Holdings, Inc.'s (NYSE:BKKT) 31% Price Drop
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Bakkt Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:BKKT) share price has dived 31% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 45% in that time.
After such a large drop in price, Bakkt Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Capital Markets industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 3.5x and even P/S above 8x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Bakkt Holdings Performed Recently?
Recent times have been advantageous for Bakkt Holdings as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue performance might be less impressive moving forward. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Bakkt Holdings' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, we see the company's revenues grew exponentially. The amazing performance means it was also able to deliver huge revenue growth over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have been over the moon with those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 87% during the coming year according to the three analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 11%.
In light of this, it's understandable that Bakkt Holdings' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What Does Bakkt Holdings' P/S Mean For Investors?
Bakkt Holdings' P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Bakkt Holdings' P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
