TPG's (NASDAQ:TPG) Dividend Will Be Increased To $0.59

TPG Inc. (NASDAQ:TPG) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 2nd of September to $0.59, which will be 40% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of $0.42. The payment will take the dividend yield to 2.8%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

TPG's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 1,089% of what it was earning. Without profits and cash flows increasing, it would be difficult for the company to continue paying the dividend at this level.

The next 12 months could see EPS growing very rapidly. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe we could see the payout ratio reaching 80%, which is definitely on the higher side, but still sustainable.

TPG's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Looking back, the company hasn't been paying the most consistent dividend, but with such a short dividend history it could be too early to draw solid conclusions. Since 2022, the annual payment back then was $1.76, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $1.74. The dividend has shrunk at a rate of less than 1% a year over this period. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Over the past three years, it looks as though TPG's EPS has declined at around 75% a year. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this becomes a long term trend.

We're Not Big Fans Of TPG's Dividend

In conclusion, we have some concerns about this dividend, even though it being raised is good. The company isn't making enough to be paying as much as it is, and the other factors don't look particularly promising either. The dividend doesn't inspire confidence that it will provide solid income in the future.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
