EZCORP, Inc. (NASDAQ:EZPW) Surges 26% Yet Its Low P/E Is No Reason For Excitement
EZCORP, Inc. (NASDAQ:EZPW) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 40% in the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, EZCORP's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.3x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 20x and even P/E's above 35x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, EZCORP has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For EZCORP?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as EZCORP's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 24% gain to the company's bottom line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 105% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 0.04% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 11% per year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we can see why EZCORP is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Final Word
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift EZCORP's P/E close to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that EZCORP maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with EZCORP, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
